History of UBI

A key piece of information any person will want to know is the history of the organization. Below is a fried overview of UBI and how we got to where we are today.

Origins and Foundation

United Bridge Insurance Services (UBI) was established with a mission to revolutionize the insurance industry by providing unparalleled service and innovative solutions to its clients. Founded by industry veterans who recognized the growing need for a customer-centric approach in insurance, UBI set out to bridge the gap between traditional insurance services and the evolving needs of modern customers.

Early Years and Growth

In January 2022, Michael McMillan identified an opportunity to sell 401k plans to small businesses in California, based on a new state mandate that required businesses with five or more employees to offer a qualified retirement plan. To capitalize on this opportunity, Michael needed a licensed insurance agent. With the assistance of his pastor in San Diego, CA, he was introduced to Stephen Carrillo. The two instantly connected and agreed to pursue this opportunity as business partners.

Market Changes and Strategic Pivot

About a year later, the state of California amended the mandate, allowing employees to opt out of the retirement plan requirement. This change led to a significant slowdown in the demand for 401k plans. Recognizing the need to pivot, Michael and Steve began exploring other avenues to expand their offerings.

In late 2023, a solution presented itself through a partnership between an Independent Marketing Organization (IMO) called OIC and National Life Group. They had created the Education Retirement Program (ERP), specifically designed to engage education professionals nationwide, providing them with guidance and education on their state-provided pensions and helping them understand what to expect from those pensions in retirement.

Embracing the ERP Program

Michael and Steve, understanding the value of a captive niche market, decided to personally test the ERP approach. Michael quickly obtained his insurance license, and Steve started working with OIC. They soon realized that the ERP program was exactly what they needed to pivot their business. The program provided a focused audience with a specific need and included a lead system that generated regular appointments for agents, setting the stage for scaling the business.

Strategic Expansion and Innovation

With Steve’s extensive training and agent development background and Michael’s expertise in technology and scaling businesses, they devised a strategy to elevate UBI to new heights. They focused on scaling their agent population to meet the demands of the ERP and beyond.

Today, UBI not only serves the education market with life and annuity insurance but has also significantly broadened its range of services. Our offerings now include Medicare, ACA, long-term care, Property & Casualty, Premium Financing, Variable Annuities, Money Market Accounts, Final Expense Planning, Trust Formation, CPA Services, and much more. This diversification has enabled UBI to extend its reach to physicians, business owners, and the general public. Despite this expansion, the education market remains the cornerstone of our business model, providing new agents with a solid foundation and a stable book of business from which to grow and succeed.
